Misfits, Dickies, DI, and Total Chaos Rule in Riverside

Misfits, Dickies, DI, and Total Chaos Rule in Riverside

Saturday, November 15, 2014 – The Riverside Municipal Auditorium is an excellent venue for a show.  Open french doors and balconies allow for fresh air or cigarette opportunities.  It  has a large floor area backed by several rows of seating, as well as a balcony.  The courtyard provides tables and seating for relaxing pre or post show as well. The sound was good and the crowd was ready for Misfits, Dickies, DI, and Total Chaos!

Total Chaos opened the night with some punk rock to get the crowd going.  They waxed nostalgia over the locale between songs, telling the crowd of times past when they would panhandle and get wasted at the Tyler Mall.  These local boys did a good job of getting the night going.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen DI but DAMN they did not disappoint!  Song after song was excellent and this is when the pits really began to take form.  It was awesome to see Eddie Tater of the Dickies play with DI; his energy is difficult to deny.  Several fans were there with their spawn and could be seen in the pit or around the edge giving a full punk-rock education.

Music Icon News are huge fans of the Dickies; they never let us down! If punk rock and puppets is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.  Always love to see Leonard messing with the other bandmates during the sets.  Adam Gomez didn’t miss a beat even with an inflatable doll being violated on his drum set.  Eddie and Dave take their pseudo punches like champs, and Stan shreds despite Leonard’s sweaty towel being thrown over his head.  Also have to give props to Leonard’s assistant who always has puppets, swim masks, and inflatable dolls ready to go.

By the time the Misfits came on there were two valid pits going on at any given time.  Although there was the baker’s dozen of complete asshats to be found, it was a night of true fans moshing it up and helping those who fell to the floor.  The Misfits played for a good two hours with a long set list to rival all set lists.  When is the last time you saw a two column set list?

One squawking fan was pulled from the audience to sing Teenagers from Mars with the band.  Lucky bastard! Good Times!

The best part for many fans came after the show when Jerry Only came down to the barrier to sign autographs or otherwise interact with all the fans.  One woman had him sign next to her misfits skull tattoo on her ribs and darted away.  I’m fairly certain that might now be a tattoo but would love to have confirmation of that!  He climbed over the barrier to see a fan in a wheelchair as well as spending true time with the fans.  It was not your typical grip-n-grin event.  I was even swept up in it and got my snaps in as well.

Jerry interacts with all of his fans that stay. Thank you Jerry!

If you have a chance to see a show at Riverside Municipal Auditorium I highly recommend it!  Not only was the venue a pleasure but everyone who worked there was easy going.

Festival Supreme 2014 Ruled Supreme Success!

Festival Supreme 2014 Ruled Supreme Success!

This year’s Festival Supreme made promises of great acts and a different venue from last year’s debut and those promises were exceeded!  Check out our Highlights Supreme!

While last year’s festival was held at Santa Monica pier, this year made the debut at The Shrine Expo and Grounds in Los Angeles.  This fine change rewarded fans with excellent access to all of the acts, as well as plenty of facilities and, most importantly, they did not run out of beer!

The tasty selection of acts from music and comedy included Tenacious D, The Kyle Gass Band, Upper Crust, Margaret Cho, Norm MacDonald, Aquabats, Eagles of Death Metal, Cheech and Chong, Awkwafina, Dethklok, The State, Peaches, TJ Miller, The Dan Band, Bo Burnham, Ron Lynch, Dr. Demento, Eric Andre, Bridget Everett, The Tulsa Skull Swingers, The Protomen, Jerrod Carmichael, Natasha Leggero, Heidecker and Wood, Doug Benson, Janeane Garofalo, Maria Bamford, Fred Armisen, Nick Kroll, Druck History, Workaholics, Comedy Bang! Bang! starring Scott Aukerman, Kumail Nanjiani, Arj Barker, The Haden Triplets, and Rob Zabrecky.  This incredible lineup was in addition to the fabulous acts caught on the Circus of Death stage inside.

The other three stages included the Phantom stage where much comedy did ensue with the likes of Dr. Demento (I can now die happy) and Margaret Cho (again, I die at peace with the world).  The Phantom stage seating was ample although some acts were definitely packed.  It was joyous that fans were polite and respectful to one another, as well as to the celebs strolling through the venue to see their colleagues at work.  And super deluxe kudos go out to the celebs that took the time to shoot the proverbial shit with their fans.  Much respect to you all!

Outside was the Gargoyle Stage and Franken Stage where both music and comedy were experienced.  AMAZ-BALLS.

Our highlights include comedy music icon Dr. Demento.  I proudly knew the words to every Dr. Demento album that my favorite physician played.  We are super stoked that there will be a movie about the wonderful Doctor and his service to mankind next year!  I’ll be in line for a ticket to Under the Smogberry Trees.  Check out his stuff online where you will be free from all of the censorship that I endured in the 70s.  Click here for streaming shows.

We at Music Icon News have a special spot for the Kyle Gass band.  Our KGB spot was rocked by tunes like “Bro Ho”, the homage to everyone’s favorite cool chick, “Man Child”, and “Questionable”.  If you don’t already own these amazing jams you must go HERE and buy the music that will change your life.  You haven’t lived until you’ve found your own KGB spot.

My childhood was spent listening to Cheech and Chong on vinyl with my mom, and what a pleasure it was to see them in person.  All reports from fans who talked with them were positive, describing them as humble and interested.  How great to see and hear them play their influential comedy jams including “Me and My Old Lady” and “Mexican Americans”.  The duo performed cleanly, showing no signs of dulled senses!

Many people were pumped to see Dethklok, and they did not disappoint!  Brenden Small was amazing transitioning from voice to voice and supported by his bandmates to make it the greatest Metalocalypse experience in all of time and space!  I felt my skin melt off with every riff.  The Doomstar Requiem songs were amazingly supreme!  If you need another dose check them out HERE.

The improved venue and different acts made Festival Supreme a fantastic way to spend a Saturday.  Everyone including fans and performers was in their prime for this action packed show of comedy and music.  From seeing childhood heroes to inspiring new acts, it was not to be missed.  Check back with Music Icon News as we go through more photos and see more photos on IG @danielnoblephotography

Sixx:AM Plays iHeartRadio Studio- Announces Tour!

Sixx:AM played to a packed studio in Los Angeles on October 7, 2014.  Everyone in attendance or watching/listening to the streams online would have to agree it was a huge success!  The breaking news was that Sixx:AM will begin their first headlining tour in April of 2015 with guests Apocalyptica.

The murmurs in the crowd were hopeful of a tour, and the affirmation was cheered as fans called out requests for places to play “Dallas!” “Chicago!”  I later talked to a fan to discover he had ventured to Los Angeles from Nevada just for the opportunity that iHeart Radio gave to Sixx:AM and Nikki Sixx fans alike.

DJ Ashba of Sixx:AM

DJ Ashba of Sixx:AM

Between songs, Sixx:AM participated in Q&A.  They illuminated the huge effect that the music, artwork, and spirit of the 60s and 70s had on them and their current release Modern Vintage.  Bandmembers cited bands like Queen, David Bowie, T-Rex, and Wings for being makers of songs.  They reported that Modern Vintage is an homage a time when songs and albums were not linear.  Sixx elaborated that Modern Vintage has some twists in turns in style and arrangement that will be pleasantly surprising to fans.

Nikki Sixx and DJ Ashba of Sixx:AM

Nikki Sixx and DJ Ashba of Sixx:AM

The band’s excitement of Modern Vintage was made clear.  Their first two albums were created as soundtracks for the templates of The Heroin Diaries and music photography.  This album belongs to them as a creative force alone.  When they sat down to create this music was when they began the dream of touring together.  This dream will be realized next April with their first headlining tour with special guests Apocalyptica.  As palpable as their excitement was, the ease with which they work and perform together made it clear that this will be a show to see in 2015.  Click Here to stay updated on this exciting new tour.

The performance turned reflective when James made a sad announcement:  His good friend and manager of 16 years passed away on Sunday.  He performed the song “Before It’s Over” dedicated to his dear friend.

Here are some of Daniel’s shots from last night.  Check back with Music Icon News for updated photo galleries and thanks for checking us out!

Fan Girl Gush Moment….As a long time fan of Nikki Sixx the night was completed as I got to meet him and shake his hand for the first time.  I told him he made my junior high dreams come true and I was pleased at how kind he was as he spoke with friends and fans alike.  One thing I noted was how his face lit up when his wife appeared.  It was truly touching to see.

Johnny Ramone Tribute 8/24/2014 @Hollywood Forever Cemetery

As many of you know one of the greatest guitar legends of punk rock, Johnny Ramone,  is memorialized at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.  On Sunday, August 24, 2014, the tenth year of his death was marked by a special event.  Johnny’s statue is surrounded by quotes from a few of his friends including Rob Zombie.  Zombie was joined by a host of friends for this special night.

The night included a performance with unannounced guest Billy Idol, as well as Steve Jones, Fred Armisen, Rob Zombie, Duff McKagen, Piggy D, and Ginger Fish.  Other guests on hand included Linda Ramone, Slim Jim Phantom, and the cast of The Devil’s Rejects: Sheri Moon Zombie, Sid Haig, Bill Mosely, Danny Trejo, and Leslie Easterbrook.

Here are a few candids of the guests and performers.

It was a great night to pay tribute to a legend, watch and hear a great performance tribute, and finished with a killer movie from Johnny’s dear friends while surrounded by loved ones, colleagues, and many, many fans.

Thank you for allowing Music Icon News to attend the event.

Horton’s Hayride Rocks Long Beach

Saturday, July 12, 2014 was a beautiful day for a hootenanny! The Reverend Horton Heat was joined by several guests for a day of classic cars, pin-ups, up-dos and music! Guests included Supersuckers, Phantom Slim Jim and Lee Rocker of Stray Cats fame, Deke Dickerson, Larry Collins, and Jello Biafra.

Music Icon News was lucky to get behind the barrier and get some killer shots of all of the musicians.  I was chilling, just getting ready to watch Supersuckers when some members of Nashville Pussy sidled up next to me to enjoy the show.  I kept my cool until I got a chance to tell them how much I dig them!  I’m hoping for some west coast tour dates!  I will always be the nerdiest fan when I see someone famous that I totally appreciate ;D  The Supersuckers destroyed their set, playing songs off of their ninth release “Get the Hell”.  Do yourself a favor and get the new album.

Deke Dickerson and Sugarballs threw down some tremendous riffs, with Deke even requesting assistance from the crowd to hold Sugarballs upside down for a solo.  Deke also sang a KICK-ASS rendition of Psycho Therapy in memory of the recently deceased Tommy Ramone.  Check out Deke’s new album as well as his other discography here.

Slim Jim Phantom and his stand-up drumming were extremely well-received by fans as he ripped through his set of Rumble in Brighton, Matchbox, Race with the Devil, and Rock this Town.  Well-known for his work with the Stray Cats, Slim Jim had zero problems throwing down with the Rev.

One killer aspect of this type of show is how the Reverend Horton Heat performed between the sets as well.  It kept the late afternoon and evening flowing with music.  Always great to hear Johnny B. Goode, especially before the amazing Larry Collins took the stage!

Lee Rocker took the stage with a set including Bulletproof, Built for Speed, Stray Cat Strut, and the Rockabilly Boogie.  It’s always great to see him swinging that bulletproof bass around, and Stray Cat Strut is a crowd favorite.

The Rev rolled out once again for Baddest of the Bad and Big Red Rocket of Love.  Somehow these song choices were befitting of the next performer, Jello Biafra.  The crowd was already going wild and pressing the barrier closer and closer to the stage, and as Jello prepared for his entrance even the crowd outside of the fences was heard chanting his name.  Jello bounded on stage in his brightly colored blazer and shirt with a zebra print fez, blasting into Jezebel.  He shed his fez and blazer on his way through John Dillinger.  No doubt the physicality of his performance was keeping him toasty!  Holiday in Cambodia caused barriers and fences to sway, but the highlight for me was definitely the Dead Kennedys Too Drunk to Fuck.  I think I had this classic on the B side of a 45. 😀

Despite a few wrinkles in planning and the last minute venue shift, the Hayride was well received.  The Reverend Horton Heat conducted themselves as the true gentlemen that they are and seamlessly jammed with all of the awesome performers and legends.  We look forward to next year’s show and the performers that will attend.

Tommy Ramone dies at 62 – July 11,2014

Many sources including the Ramones social media confirm that Tommy Ramone, the last living original member of punk legend the Ramones, has died while in hospice care following a battle with cancer.

Tommy continued to produce and play music after working with the Ramones.  He most recently wrote and played bluegrass music with his partner Claudia Tienan in the band Uncle Monk.

It will be interesting to hear how musicians react to his passing as they contemplate his legacy of music.
